How this calculator works
The calculator converts the speed and file size to bits, applies network efficiency, and divides total file bits by effective throughput.
The formula
file bytes × 8 ÷ (upload bits per second × network efficiency)Bitrates are normalized to bits per second, durations to seconds, and storage to bytes before calculation.
Worked examples
- A 1 GB file at 100 Mbps takes about 89 seconds at 90% efficiency.
- A 10 GB batch at 20 Mbps takes about 74 minutes at 90% efficiency.
- A 500 MiB file at 10 MB/s takes about 57 seconds at 90% efficiency.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. Eight megabits equal one megabyte before network overhead.
Why is my real upload slower?
Wi-Fi, server limits, congestion, retransmissions, and other devices reduce the speed available to a transfer.
